Personal Development with Coach Tonya: My Hero

As I sat at my computer on Saturday the phone rang, I looked over and saw that it was my mother.  “I just wanted you to know…” she started and I could tell she was excited about something, “Today was the first annual Poker Run.”

She explained that the Poker Run was a contest for motorcycle riders, they had to stop at 5 different places get a card and then at the end the one with the best poker hand won.  I knew there was more so she rushed on, “Your grandma won!!” she told me happily.

My maternal grandma had always been one of my biggest supporters and my long time hero.  She was truly a pioneer of her time.  Starting her family during the 1950’s she was anything but your typical housewife as her and my grandfather raised their 5 children.  She was not able to get pregnant until after the age of 30. “And once we started we didn’t know how to stop.” she would tell us.

Throughout the years my grandma and grandfather maintained their own separate checking accounts with the agreement that Grandpa paid the household bills and my grandmother took care of paying for all the children expenses such as shoes and clothes for five - not something that was typical for their generation.  Not only did my grandparents share the household responsibilities, but also the housework - again something out of the norm.  But, it worked for them and the proof is in the over sixty years of marriage!

After her youngest son stated school she went back to tech school to become secretary and then went on to work for the local high school for well over 20 years, in fact she still went back and filled in when they needed her after she retired. She would often talk about her experiences referring to a list of things that she wanted to do in her lifetime.

I remember a story that she told me one time, a semi driver made a delivery and she talked him into letting her drive his semi truck because driving a semi truck was on her list of things she wanted to do before she turned 30.  It is hard to say no to my grandmother and so he took her out to a deserted area the following Saturday and taught her how to drive it. Grandma didn’t start riding a motorcycle until she was over 60 years old, again it was one of those things that she just always wanted to do.  So, she took the class to learn how and got herself a bike.

Now, at 86 years old with a good 200 miles on her bike before the Poker Run, she had won.  I couldn’t stop smiling I had such pride and such admiration for the kind of woman that she was and how she was filled with so much life and spirit.  And with all that she did to amaze me, she was still the type of grandmother that always made sure that you were fed when you visited.  She is armed with the ability to whip a feast out of thin air in a matter of minutes. Throughout my entire life grandma was one of my biggest supporters - no matter how outside the mainstream I wanted to go, she was there with a smile and a “way to go”.

All this came flooding into my memory as I talked to my mother. “She is my hero” I exclaimed to my mother.

“She is where you get your strength from” she told me and I have no doubt.  I imagine that I feel as she did, finding ways to meet the world on my terms.  Not feeling like I have to be anyone or anything other than who I wanted to be.

I think that she is an inspiration to people all over this world.  You are never too old to follow your passion or your dreams and my grandmother is a living example of determination, possibilities, and living life to its fullest.

What’s on your list of things you want to accomplish?  It is never too late to grab life and start creating the one that you want.

Business Buzz with Jody: Ethics Important in Business

Quite often when our family has guests in our home, my husband can make the Best Steak in the world.

He is often asked “How to Cook a New York Strip Steak  to perfection” and he just smiles and never really gives away his secret.

After all, a great cook knows how to keep his audience coming back for more & more & more!

I, on the other hand, love to talk and share my knowledge with everyone around me.

In the past when I’ve worked with hundreds of ladies in the Home Party business Christmas was usually pretty good!

Lots of Customers! Lots of Hostesses! Lots and I mean LOTS of Sales!

Then came January.  Typically the slowest month for the Party Business….but not in my group!

I worked with my awesome and amazing team to make sure they started out the yr with a Bang (no pun intended..lol) and they sure did.

When other teams were struggling (arrrggghhhh hate that word) MY team was Thriving.

Sure they had a few shows cancel or postpone, but they had plenty to cover that!

And when other teams were trying to ‘ReBuild’ in Feb……MY team consistently signed up new People, had high shows and kept their INCOME Rolling IN!?

Why?

Because I taught them well!

I gave them Simple and Usable Tips/Strategies to do every Day!

Their shows CONTINUED well into January (then Feb…Mar…and April….amazing how that works!), their CUSTOMER/HOSTESS Base grew, and best of all…..so did their POCKETBOOKS! Ka-Ching!

Now my mission is to help other ladies, no matter what your home biz is!

These are the tips and encouragement I used with MY team for over 9 yrs! Now you can benefit too!

You can learn “How to cook a New York Strip Steak” in your business, and have people asking how you did it….you can just smile!

If you weren’t happy with your results in 2008, don’t SETTLE for your results in 2009  CREATE New and Better ones!

The Domestic Goddess Corner: Frugality and the Environment

Everything we do impacts the environment. All the foods we eat, the products we use, the items we buy and put into our home affects our planet. It is up to us to make the wisest choices for our families to help clean up and preserve our environment and our planet. We only have one Earth. Let us all do what we can to keep it livable.

I watched the Ellen DeGeneres show last Wednesday. On her show she had a woman on that works with ocean creatures. She helps educate people about extinction of sea creatures (by the way- hundreds of species of fish are extinct now..never to return!)  Specifically, she spoke about how baby Albatross (birds) are dying because of the TONS of plastic in our oceans. PLASTIC! What happens is this: Either consumers (us) or manufacturers throw the plastic away instead of recycling it. At some point is gets broken down into little tiny pieces and then DUMPED in oceans. The Mommy Albatross goes out to get food to feed her babies, thinks the little pieces of plastic are food, eats it then takes it home to baby to eat. The babies stomachs get full of plastic and can’t eat, then they die. How sad! It proves my point, everything is related, from me going to the store and buying a soda then throwing the empty plastic bottle away….and a bird species becoming extinct.

My son is 15 years old. He just completed his freshman year of high school. He joined a group called “The Parker Green Squad”. This group is helping to educate the students about the dangers to our planet and the environment, recycling, etc. They are trying to raise money to put recycling bins through out the school. I couldn’t be more proud! He joined all on his own, and when he told me he said he felt that he was doing something important. Of course, I cried because I was so proud of my baby…almost grown up! It amazes me how a young man can do whatever he can to help save our planet and US, yet a grown person is to lazy and selfish to simply recycle a plastic bottle!

For several years now, I have kept a  ”junk cupboard”. In it I put odds and ends for future use. I should probably rename this cupboard, but it works. I have toilet paper/paper towel tubes, a baggie of soap slivers, bread bags, empty coffee cans, empty cereal boxes, empty/clean milk jugs. Whatever I might possibly find a use for later. Maybe for a craft project, maybe I have a need around the house. Whatever comes up, I go to the “junk cupboard” first to see if I something that will work instead of buying a new something. My bathroom garbage can is an old, re-used, large coffee can. It works perfect. I currently do not have a filing cabinet, soon but not yet. In the meantime I have a couple of clean, re-used cereal boxes; the tops cut off on a diagonal line; to store and keep my important papers seperate. It works well, actually. The wall above my computer is decorated with my son’s art work and his kindergarten graduation certificate ( it has his picture on it…very adorable). As I looked around my home the other day, I realized 99% of my possessions are used. Very little was bought new. I feel good about that because I know I am doing my part to keep items out of the landfill, taking up space and ruining our environment, killing species of animals that, once gone, will never come back.

By the way, I am now boycotting fish. I love to eat fish and will miss it, but I feel a higher calling and it is a sacrifice I am willing to make. I will never be able to eat a piece of cod, or orange roughy, again and not think of the dying baby albatross!

So, we all need to pay attention to the big picture! We need to realize that EVERYTHING we do affects the entire world around us, even the fish in the oceans, the birds and wildlife in the rain forests. We can ALL do something, however small a something, to make a difference!
