Personal Development with Coach Tonya: Other Door, Please!
My best friend worked sometime as a clerk at a gas station on the graveyard shift. Being an night owl I would give her a call during her shift to chat. One warm summer evening I called her up - she was extremely frustrated. The gas station had to doors for patrons to enter through, but she had to lock one of the doors due to a broken fan that prevented insects from flooding into the store. She told me that she put a big sign on neon colored paper that said, “Use Other Door”, yet throughout the evening without fail customers when to the locked door - they even knocked with puzzlement as to why the door was locked. She lost count of how many times she yelled, “OTHER DOOR, PLEASE!” despite the huge neon orange sign that stated the same.
It really got me thinking about how people continue to go down the wrong path in life ignoring all the signs. How many times do we continue to make the same mistakes over and over? And is it really a lack of recognizing the signs or is a question of being stuck in old patterns?
Breaking old patterns is often one of the hardest things that we can do in our lives and it is not the blatant disregard of the signs but staying within the comfort zone - which may mean continuing with unhealthy patterns. To change it is important to first become aware of patterns and choices that we keep making. We need then to understand how they are holding us back from changing our lives and reaching our true potential. There is no shame in making a mistake, but to make the same one again and again will not help create the life that you want. You are doing a disservice to yourself if you think that by doing the same thing you will change the outcome.
If you are stuck in a pattern and not able to change it by yourself seek out help! Make the commitment to create the outcome you want and stick with it - no its not the easiest choice in the world, but nothing worthwhile comes easy. Remember those that do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it! So the next time your see “Other Door, Please” instead of trying to go through a locked door - take a different approach.

Business Buzz with Jody: Inhale Positivity Exhale Negativity
I am a strong believer of the adage that “What GOES around COMES around!” That if we are a ‘positive’ person more ‘positve’ things keep happening in our lives (the same is true for the ‘negative’) My dad comes to mind whenever I talk to people about this subject, for years his motto around our home was G.I.G.O. (Garbage In Garbage Out) and as a coach and teacher for over 38 years he really LIVED by this example.
For years people would ask me if Mr.Maley was my father? And since my father had a reputation of being a ’strict teacher’ I’d always reply “yesssss” with a little hesitancy. Then as I started getting a little older and past my teen years the comments I would hear from people were “Wow, Mr. Maley is your dad! He was the only teacher I had growing up that actually TAUGHT me something. He may have been strict, but as I grew up those Life Lessons have stuck with me!”
As I reflect who I am today and have six children, ranging from 21 to 5, I am truly Thankful and Grateful for all the LIFE LESSONS my dad did teach me. Things like FAMILY and TOGETHER TIME (for awhile there my dad had deemed the TV as the GARBAGE in our lives and for about 8 yrs we didn’t own one!) and now as a mom with the kids growing up in the Computer Arena, I too, find that I quite frequently turn-off all computers, TV’s and XBOXES and say “Let’s just sit down and play SCRABBLE!” We pop the popcorn, grab some junk food and have a great family nite. My kids (now that they too are older) have all come to me and said thanks, because they actually learned to Interact with their family and now that they are all heading out into the ‘Real World’ of jobs and businesses they can, I can’t believe I’m saying this, COMMUNICATE with their bosses and fellow employees! My daughter who is 17 has been working for a couple yrs at Pizza Hut and has already been Promoted to Assistant Manager, and once she is old enough can’t wait to be an entrepeneur (LIKE MOM) and make the
real money.
So, in conclusion, what kind of Good Things can YOU start today that will make an influence on someone in the Future? Here’s just a small, but Very Effective start, SMILE! It’s a proven fact that you cannot Think Negative and Smile at the same time. Turn that frown upside down people….it just might Grow to Big Things!

The Domestic Goddess Corner: Homemade Beauty
I have had some requests to do a post on all natural beauty products. So I did some research to supplement the information that I already had. I do not know how to make homemade eye shadow and lipstick. These recipes and suggestions are all natural altenatives to other beauty products. Most recipes contain ingredients that you already have in the kitchen, making these recipes very inexpensive and affordable. I hope some of you try at least one of these recipes and comment back and let me know how they worked for you. Include any improvements that you made to the product.
- wrinkle remover: Honey ( yes just plain old honey). Dab onto desired areas, around eyes and mouth for example. Leave on for approximatley 10 minutes, then rinse with warm/hot water. ( I have used this for about 2 years now, and nobody believes that I am 33- everyone thinks i am in my mid to late 20’s. Could just be a coincidence though!)
- Natural Exfoliator: combine 2 tablespoons corn meal, 1/2 cup honey, and 1-2 tablespoons hot water to make a paste. You can mix in aloe gel or olive oil for softening benefits. Rub on with washcloth, rinse with water.
- Homemade Lotion: 1/2 ounce Cocoa Butter (melted), 1 ounce olive oil, 1 ounce orange juice, 2 drops essential oil (orange if possible-smells great and combines well with cocoa butter). Mix all ingredients together. You can put in an reused lotion or squeeze bottle container. I put mine in a redused blue noxema tub with screw on lid. I suggest keeping this in the refridgerator because it will be cool when you put it on and it feels wonderful, especially in the summer time.
- Homemade body oil: 2 parts olive oil, 1 part lemon juice. Mix ingredients and store in airtight container. Does not need refridgeration. Shake well before each use. I use this every night before bed and my skin has never been so soft! I reused an empty lotion container for my body oil.
- lip gloss: this is incredibly easy! This idea is also a great way to use up that last little bit of lipsick that is stuck down in the bottom of the lipstick tube. Scrape out the remaining lipstick and put in a small, microwave safe container. Depending on how much lipstick you use ( you can also use multiple colors to create your own shade), Put in about a tablespoon of vaseline ( the good old fashion petroleum jelly stuff that all of us have in our medicine cabinet somewhere). Microwave until melted. Watch carefully and microwave about 10 seconds at a time. I would suggest reusing an old Carmex container- the one with the screw on yellow lid. Reuse any container that will easily go into your purse and not leak.
I have found these suggestions are easy to create in my kitchen, very inexpensive to make and work just as well, usually better, than anything I can buy in a store. An added benefit is that I have Eczema, skin allergies and EXTREMELY sensitive skin. I can use all these products and not worry about an allergic reaction. The ingredrients are all natural, therefore not harming my body or our earth. I hope you enjoy these recipes. Leave your comment and let me know how you like them!
