Personal Development with Coach Tonya: Realizing Your Power
There are times in our lives that we can feel powerless over what is going on around us. It has been a rough month for me. Financially we are struggling, we are having issues with our phone/internet provider which has made working almost impossible, even something as simple as leaving the house has become a challenge due to the road construction in front of our house. It was like a cosmic domino effect had been put in motion leaving me to duck and dodge. I felt powerless with the culmination of everything that was going on, it seemed that everything that could go wrong was. With everything moving so fast in my mind creating a whirlwind of gloom, I turned to the Serenity Prayer:
God grant me the serenity to
accept the things I can not change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.
I took some time to sit quietly and reflect, letting all the good in my life shine through this darkness that was surrounding me. With everything going “wrong”, I still had plenty in my life to be thankful for and I was able to grab hold of a better perspective.
The next step was to released to the Universe what I could not change, having faith that it too would be resolved soon enough. If I could not fix it or change it then there was no sense of hanging on to it.
The Laws of Attraction state that you get back what you put out to the universe and panic, powerlessness, and despair was pouring out of me. By taking control over my reactions to the this flood of bad news I changed that sending out more positive energy instead.
In our lives it is up to us to make the choice to realize the strength that we have in us to move forward. We need to count our blessings, gain perspective, and make the choice to surrender what we can not change and embrace the the reality of what we do have control over. All of us have great power and when we learn how to apply it to our lives we claim what is ours, a life created by us that sustains us even when we feel powerless.

Business Buzz with Jody: How to Set Goals
It’s easy enough to write down a bunch of stuff you want to do but it’s not always easy how to figure out what you want. Lots of people want to set them but they don’t know how to set goals.
We started out talking about what types of goals to set. You can set goals concerning any area of your life: relationships, business, personal, health, education. The list could go on and on. Find the area of your life that you would like to work on and define what your goals are.
We defined how to build a roadmap to goals. When coaching, we will ask a person what they would like to do, what are their dreams and what do they hope to accomplish? What are they passionate about? That way we know what result they desire.
If you are writing goals ask yourself what you desire to do and then what you are willing to do to get it. The next step is to ask yourself, what can I do now, today, to start? For example, if you want to learn to golf, you need to find a golf instructor then find out how much it is. The steps progress from there. Simple enough.
An element that many forget is how to feel the success. Each step along the way is like a mini goal. Celebrate each success and keep your eye on the goal.
Take care of business first. If you are starting out with a new goal or dusting off some old ones, take care of that thing that is nagging you. I have a friend who was interested in looking for a different way to support herself but the thing nagging her was that she wasn’t happy with where she was living. She couldn’t get motivated to do anything because she didn’t like her apartment. So she had to take care of that before she moved on for a career search. Then she was free to start on the rest of her life.
Define what success is and give it a measurability. To be a leader, it doesn’t have to mean you lead large crowds. If you desire to be a leader and you have one person following you, you are a leader. If you want to be a sales person and one person makes a purchase from you, you are a sales person. If you can do it for one thing, it is duplicatable to other areas.
When you set goals be mindful of your state of mind. Many people set goals at the beginning of a new year and call them resolutions. Many have broken resolutions by the next week. It becomes a habit, I had a relative whose New Years resolution every year was to quit smoking. If you have a habit of breaking the resolutions then that’s not the right frame. Any time of year is a good time to set goals. I think my birthday is a good landmark and my son pointed that out to me very well. He will be 8 next month and on my birthday this year he made me a card that said “Happy Birthday and Happy New Year!”, advancing in a new year of you life is a great time to reflect and look to the future. Special days of the year are great for reflection and re-evaluation.
If you do get off track, that’s not the end. You can choose to give up and be derailed or you can see it as a detour. If you choose to see it as a detour then you can find the road back and start where you left off.
Be tenacious and write it in stone. Make it non negotiable. My son wants a video game system, he’s wanted it for several months. He has asked me, asked dad, asked Nana etc, he works lemonade stands and bugs me and bugs me. He will not give up, he really wants this, it’s his goal to get it and nothing will stop him. He has taught me some lessons on goals with out a doubt and he will be getting what he desires for his birthday.
Work on the values that will get you your goal. If you wish to teach then take a speaking class, work on communication skills. Start writing a blog. Whatever you can do to do what a teacher does, do that. If you want to lead people, work on self accountability. If you desire to lose weight, make health your number one value.
Accountability is one of the largest factors once you have written your goals. It’s great if you can find an accountability partner. Pick someone to mastermind with or who you are sure will hold you to what you say. If you don’t have anyone like that, just tell everyone you know “I’m going to travel Europe in 2 years” if you tell enough people, they will start asking you what you are doing to reach your goal, they will check in on that. Making bold statements always holds you accountable.
Write the list, accept the achievements, don’t get derailed and never, ever, ever give up.
What is a goal you are working on?

The Domestic Goddess Corner: General Tips for Saving Money in the Grocery Store
- check out the mark downs section of your grocery store. These are often filled with great deals that will save you serious dough on your food budget. Some items are over stocks or are close to expiring. Make sure if food items are about to expire they can be frozen or used immediately.
- Look at the store’s flyer for their current deals and sales. Try to incorporate the good deals into your shopping list and menu. Make sure to buy only items that you will use. It isn’t a good deal if it does not get used
- If you clip coupons make sure they are for goods you will purchase anyway. Do not be afraid to try a different product if you find a really good coupon or sale price. Most of the time change is a good thing.
- Try store brands. Most store brands taste just as good as the name brand and in some cases, better. If you are unsure if you will like a product, just buy one and try it. If you don’t like you do not have to buy it again.
- Avoid processed, packaged and otherwise low nutrition foods. While items like Hamburger Helper can be bought relatively cheaply, they have very little nutritional value, are over packaged, over processed and basically a drain on your budget. Do an internet search for do it yourself meals and make them from scratch at home. You will save big on your food budget this way. You can control the ingredients used, if you use natural, organic or “regular” ingredients. This also allows you to taylor the meal to your families likes and dislikes. Throwing some pasta, a binder like cream of mushroom soup, meat and veggies in a pot and cooking it takes about 15 minutes with 5 to 10 minutes of preparation time depending on how organized your kitchen is. This also allows you to get creative and try new ingredients, use up leftovers and make extra for another day. Homemade food almost always, I have found in my household, has leftovers.
- Stick to the perimeter of the grocery store. This is usually where they have the least processed and packaged foods located. The more “whole” a food is, the better that food is for you and your family. A potato in its natural form has much more nutrition than a box of mashed potato flakes. Just check out the label on the box for proof.
- Prepare as much of the food you and your family eats from scratch as possible. Not everyone has time to bake batches of homemade bread or whip up a 5 course meal. Do what you can. Make a big pot of homemade soup and freeze the leftovers for another busy day. Casseroles are an easy way to use up leftovers and use ingedients you have on hand. I have weekends off and spend a chunk of time baking and cooking meals from scratch and freezing them to eat during the week when I am to busy with school, work, and running my son around to have alot of time to spend in the kitchen. When that chunk of time is depends on what else I have going on that weekend. I enjoy cooking so it doesn’t take me long and I have fun getting creative. Even if you only make and store a few things, that is better than hitting the drive through or buying convenience foods at the store.
