Knowing what is right for you! October 31, 2007
Posted by Tonya in : From Coach Tonya , add a comment“…and you had 5?” I said in amazement over my shoulder to my grandmother, as I tried to herd my over stimulated, over hyper, little 3 year old pirate into the car. My grandmother just threw her head back and laughed.
My Grandma Maxted had 5 kids in 6 and half years, starting when she was 29 years old, something that just boggled my mind as I chase Logan around the car.
5 little ones running around all 6 years old and younger. I have such great admiration for mothers of more than one child. Not, that Logan is an out of control child, in fact just the opposite. He is a very bright and independed little boy. And the best way to describe his energy level is that he is the boy form of the energizer bunny…he keeps going and going…
With Logan turning 3 years old this year, I have had several people ask me, “So, when are you going to have another?”
ANOTHER?? I just got use to a child that sleeps throug the night, no diapers, and a child that can somewhat follow simple directions. He no longer needs the constant attention that children younger needs.
Don’t get me wrong, there might be a time in the future that I forget about the first year of sleep deprivation that comes with a new baby.
I might even forget the incredible amount of accessories that new babys need, even for a simple visit to grandma’s…as if carrying around the baby in my body for 9 months wasn’t enough…then for the next 2 years I become a pack mule, lugging around the carseat, stroller, diaper bag, playpen and whatever else is needed to keep the precious occupied during the outing.
Maybe if I was a different person or in a different place in my life, I might feel pressured to have another baby, because that is what everyone around me feels that I should do, but I know that is not what is best for me, my family or even a new baby.
Don’t feel pressured into the major decisions in your life, there is always going to be people that feel that they know what is best for you, that have advice on tap, and know exactly what you need in your life, at least in their minds. The reality is that you have to make choices for your life based on what is going to work for you, what is going to help you achieve the life that you want.
Maybe in a couple years we will be welcoming a new addition to our family, then again we might not, either way that decision will be made by me and my husband, not anyone else.

Finding Balance October 29, 2007
Posted by Tonya in : From Coach Tonya , add a commentThe definition of balance is a “harmonious arrangement or relation of parts or elements within a whole (as in a design). The idea of life/work balance is to be able to create and maintain that “harmonious arrangement” between running a business and being an equally contributing presence in your family. Balancing family and running a business can be a daunting task, the objectives of this class is to give you a deeper understanding of balance and the benefits of balancing your family life with your business life. We will also explore ways to create and maintain your balance.
What does balance mean to you? Each of us are individuals, what means balance to me might not work for someone else because of differences in priorities and lives. Decide what you want. It not just about how much time you devote to each area, it is about that “harmonious arrangement”. Decide what is important, what you want to accomplish over the next 6 months, the next year, the next five years. Ask yourself what you want your life to be like, what is your ideal life.
One of the reasons that I think people find it so hard to balance is that they are not looking in the terms of what they want to accomplish professionally and as a parent. Without definition “balance” becomes a vague and generic term that fails to bring harmony because there is no meaning behind it.
So, when defining what balance means to you also have to answer the question “What do you hope to accomplish by creating and maintaining balance.
You want a way to give time to the priorities in your life?
Are you hoping that balance is going to allow you to do what you need to do with a minimal of stress?
Will balance give you time to grow your business and spend more time with your family?
It maybe all of the above and it might be for totally different reasons then my examples.
Whatever the reason, balance has different meanings to everyone. Take some time when deciding to create balance in your life to explore what it means to you and what you want from it.

Fall is finally here! October 24, 2007
Posted by Tonya in : From Coach Tonya , add a comment
Fall took its time coming here in Wisconsin, the weather has been volleying between 75+ to 50 degrees from one day to the next. Like a spinning wheel never knowing what number it is going to stop on. Today however, it not only felt like fall, but it looked it. As Logan and I drove to school we saw all the gorgeous reds, oranges, yellows, and browns spread out across the park like a blanket.
Logan pointed out the different colored trees as we drove down the street. I watched him as he eyes darted around looking for all the colors, spying a flock of geese flying south, his bright blue eyes taking in everything around him. He even sniffed the air and said, “Momma it smells like grass”.
The air was filled with that autumn crispness with a wind that blew the dry leaves across the pavement, creating a wind chime of rustling and crinkling sounds.
I love this time of year from the rich colors to the briskness in the air.
Have you celebrated the changing of the season with your family?
Here are some ideas of how to celebrate fall as a family:
- Before it turns to cold, take a walk. Take in the scenery around you and share it with your loved ones.
- While you are out for your walk collect some fall leaves that you and your kids can turn into a fall collage. Have a contest and see who can find the most different colored leaves.
- Rake up leaves and then jump in the piles! Have fun!!
Share all the wonders of the new season together as a family, it will be time you will cherish. And remember it is the simple pleasures in life that can make you realize how blessed you are.

To my son on this 3 year milestone October 16, 2007
Posted by Tonya in : From Coach Tonya , 4commentsIt’s hard on a mother’s heart sometimes all the emotions that we have watching our children grow up; from joy of watching them discover the world, to fear that the time is going to pass too quickly or that we are going to miss all those moments that make a imprint on our souls. The real kicker is that our children will never understand until they are holding their own little one in their arms, starting their own journey into parenthood.
One of the greatest lessons that I have learned in my life is to tell the people in your life how you feel about them, especially our children. I wrote a letter to Logan for his 3rd birthday. I know it is over his head right now at 3 years old and that is alright…when he is old enough, this letter and the others will be waiting for him.
To my Son whose laughter is music to my ears and whose smile lights my way in the darkness:
My Dearest Logan,
I watched as you turned 3 years old last week. It already seems like a lifetime that we have spent together, as I watched you grow from a tiny baby into such an independent big boy. From crawling and toddling to running and jumping, it seems like yesterday when I welcomed you into the world. On that day I was also born into motherhood and it has been one of the best and hardest 3 years of my life.
The best because I have come to know this wonderful little boy that fills my life with such joy. A golden haired little prince that gives me super hugs and tells me that he love me too much. The hardest because as I have watched you grow I have had to grow as a mother, learning the ins and outs, worrying about the job that I am doing as your mother, hoping that every decision that I make will help you find your place in this world and your purpose in life.
You are a light in the world. Even at such a young age, you never hesitate to share your smile with someone, to give hugs, or to show your excitement for something that those around you are taking for granted.
I look forward to the years to come, but also have learned to take in each and everyday with you, to live in the moment of us fighting off monsters, or singing to our favorite songs, and of course those times when you stay still long enough for me to give you a cuddle.
With all my love,
Momma
